Suffolk Law Student Named Drinan Fellow

Casey Groff, a third-year evening student, was named this year’s recipient of the Thomas J. Drinan Memorial Fellowship, awarded annually to fund the summer employment of a Suffolk Law student.
“It’s a tremendous honor,” said Groff. “It’s amazing to have the support of so many attorneys involved in the Drinan Committee.”
Named for public defender and federal prosecutor Thomas J. Drinan JD ’76, the Drinan Fellowship is granted to a Suffolk Law student who demonstrates a commitment to the highest standards of integrity and advocacy within the criminal justice system. Since 1988, the Drinan Committee has chosen one student for a 10-week summer position in a public office in Massachusetts engaged in the prosecution or defense of criminal cases.
Groff will spend this summer working in the state Public Defender’s office. State Attorney General Martha Coakley, Groff’s former employer in both the Middlesex District Attorney’s office and Attorney General’s office, gave the keynote address at a recent cocktail reception for the fellowship.
“Casey stood out from the other excellent finalists in part because of her poise and articulate presentation at the committee’s interview,” said Drinan Committee chair Richard Glovsky, a partner at Prince, Lobel, Glovsky & Tye. “She will add immeasurably to the wonderful cadre of past Drinan fellows, each of whom has added luster to the name of Thomas Drinan.”
In the public defender’s office, Groff will focus on in-court advocacy while also working on arraignments and bail arguments and interviewing clients and witnesses. “This gives me an opportunity to do something really different,” said Groff.
The Cambridge and Concord native said she was humbled by her recent honor.
“You hear so many incredible things about Thomas Drinan and who he was as a lawyer,” said Groff. “Being able to carry out a fellowship in his name is a real honor.”
