"What happens is that we've got a generation of kids that have a great anxiety of failing," Vinson says. Children of hovering parents often arrive at college "already burned out from the treadmill of success their parents have placed them on," she adds.

Vinson published a paper on the subject, "Hovering Too Close: The Ramifications of Helicopter Parenting in Higher Education," earlier this year.
