Moot Court Team Advances to Nationals

MootCourtTeam-and-coaches07.jpg The Suffolk University Law School National Moot Court Team—made up of third-year law students Matthew Bove, Liz Kosterlitz, and Bryan Serino—advanced to the National Moot Court Competition by placing second overall at the Northeast Regional Competition, held at Quinnipiac Law School in Connecticut Nov. 2-4.

The team advanced through both preliminary rounds before defeating Vermont Law School in the semi-finals. In the finals, the team narrowly lost to Syracuse University Law School by what the judges called an exceptionally narrow margin.

The team—coached by Julie Baker, associate professor of legal writing, and Jason Valencia JD ’03 —automatically moves on to the National Competition, which invites the top 28 law school moot court teams from across the nation to compete. The competition will be held in New York City in January.

“The National Moot Court Team, as well as coach Julie Baker, should be congratulated for this wonderful achievement,” said Professor Richard Pizzano, faculty advisor to the moot court program. “As an advisor to many competitive teams over the years, I know firsthand the hard work, commitment, and time that it takes to reach this level of accomplishment. I wish the National Moot Court Team great success in the National Competition this January.”

Said Professor Baker, “We could not be more excited to be representing Suffolk Law School at the Nationals. We would like to thank all of the members of the SULS community for their support and help in achieving this victory. Jason and I especially want to tell the team members again how proud we are of them for their excellent oral and written advocacy, and for conducting themselves in a friendly and professional manner throughout the competition.”
