Cutting-edge issues challenge lawyers and managers in the new, more transparent and highly regulated nonprofit environment. The nonprofit sector has seen tremendous growth over the past decade and now accounts for almost 14% of the Massachusetts workforce. As nonprofits provide a greater percentage of social and other services historically performed by government and families, they have come under increased scrutiny and more stringent regulation. One of the latest efforts is “regulation through disclosure” under the new I.R.S. Form 990, soon to be applicable to all nonprofits with gross revenues over $250,000 per year.

Attend this program and learn of potential traps for the unwary in entity formation, tax exemption, reorganization, governance, member and officer discipline, meeting procedures, and regulatory compliance. Taught by leading practitioners and top government regulators, the conference illustrates current nonprofit law and developing trends including critical enforcement directions.

This program will help recent graduates who want to work with nonprofits, veteran practitioners interested in expanding their transactional business work into the nonprofit sector, and business attorneys interested in avoiding traps for the unwary while performing pro bono work for nonprofits. In addition, the program will update you on how to handle the latest legal challenges for nonprofit organizations.

Attend and Learn:
  • How to avoid pitfalls caused by differences between nonprofit and for-profit entities
  • The special quirks of Massachusetts nonprofit law and regulation
  • The latest information on regulatory initiatives and Internal Revenue Service plans
  • The Massachusetts version of the pending Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act
  • The latest governance techniques and best practices
