When does the Summer Program start?

Students will have access to student housing in Lund on Thursday, June 14, 2012. On Friday, June 15th there will be an informal presentation for both U.S. and Swedish students comparing the U.S. and Swedish legal systems.

On Saturday, June 16th there will be a program orientation followed by a welcoming social event.

Monday, June 18th at 9:30 AM classes begin.

Please check the program website for more detailed information about travel and arrival in Lund.

How do I get to Lund?

The easiest way to get to Lund from Boston is to fly into Kastrup airport in Copenhagen, Denmark and take the train 50 minutes to the center of Lund.

The train station is located in Kastrup airport.

Among others, Icelandair and British Airways fly from Boston to Copenhagen through Reykjavik, Iceland and London, England respectively.

The airfare from Boston varies and the rates change but early booking is usually cheaper.

In addition there are travel services for students that might have relatively cheaper airfares.

Check the program website for more detailed information.

Can I buy the course materials in Lund?

You have to bring your own books.

Course materials will not be sold in Lund.

All course materials will be available in the Suffolk Law Bookstore starting in late April or early May and most can be purchased online at Amazon.com or other commercial websites.

Students must buy these materials before leaving for Lund.

Course material information will be posted on the program course website.

What is the currency?

The currency is the Swedish kronor. Students should check the exchange rate as it fluctuates often. ATM machines are readily available throughout Denmark and Sweden.

What bedding do I need to bring to Lund?

You will find a pillow and a duvet in the room, sheets, pillow cases and towels.

There are stores close by where other room supplies can be bought relatively inexpensively.

Can I buy electronic adapters in Lund?

It is a good idea to buy plug adapters before you leave for Sweden.

In addition, you may need a voltage converter.

U.S. voltage is 120 while in Sweden it is 230/400.

Some American appliances and computers have built-in voltage converters for use in Europe. Check yours.

If there is no converter you should buy a voltage converter in the US.

Converters are available at Radio Shack, among other places.

Do I need to bring my Suffolk ID?

Bring your Suffolk ID in order to get student prices on travel and goods and to get into the Swedish nations (Lund student houses).

How much U.S. and foreign currency should I take with me to Lund?

It is not a good idea to carry too much cash while traveling. Certainly a small amount of Swedish currency when you arrive would be useful.

Use of credit cards in Sweden and in other European countries is becoming somewhat complicated. Credit cards issued by Swedish and other European banks contain a special security chip and a PIN number as a means of security. As a result, many European merchants will ask you for your PIN number whenever you wish to use your American Bank issued credit card. PIN numbers are NOT routinely issued by American Bank credit cards. Some merchants will accept the American credit card along with your passport or driver's license as identification.

Bank Debit cards (which do routinely include a PIN number) may be used almost everywhere the same as a credit card. In addition, you should check with your bank but your Debit Card may be used in ATM’s throughout Lund for cash withdrawals. Be aware, however, that there most likely will be a transaction fee attached to the use of a foreign ATM withdrawal with your Debit Card. Thus, one suggestion is to make sure you have enough money in your bank account so that you can use your debit card instead of carrying a large amount of cash to Sweden.

Are there food stores in Lund? What about dining out?

There is an American style supermarket in the center of Lund. It sells everything you would buy in the States.

There are numerous and varied restaurants in Lund, from fast food to fine dining. Italian food is very popular. Local cafes are excellent and there is a traditional Irish pub three blocks from the School. Prices are moderate.

What is the weather like during the Program?

Weather conditions can be very variable. Cool temperatures and rain are not unusual but last summer saw near perfect weather — sunny in the upper 70's and low 80's.

What is the time differential between Boston and Lund?

During the period of the program there is a six hour difference (Boston noon is Lund 6:00 PM).

Can I rent a bike in Lund?

Bikes can be rented weekly for approximately 130 SEK (less than $20 per week).

How do we handle medicines and prescriptions in Sweden?

Bring all prescribed medicines. Also, bring your insurance cards and, if possible, all valid prescriptions. You should also bring nonprescription items like Ibuprofen or Tylenol as they are either not readily available or very expensive. Emergency medical care is available in Lund.

Can I use my American cell phone in Sweden?

Most American cell phones can not be used in Sweden unless specially equipped. Inexpensive cell phones and SIM cards are available for purchase in Lund.

 What about internet connections?

Internet connections are available in your apartment. Bring an internet cable as WiFi is not available in housing, as of this date.
