The Third Annual Juvenile Justice Conference is a full day seminar, which includes both plenary lectures and a variety of breakout sessions.Topics for this year's conference include:

  • The Interrelationship Between Special Education and Juvenile Delinquency
  • Schools and Probation: Should students be sent to DYS for school violations or are status offenses being criminalized? Find out what probation's role is in schools and school problems.
  • Defending School Disciplinary Hearings: Learn how to use suspension and expulsion hearings as discovery tools in delinquency cases; a substantive review of students' due process rights.
  • Search & Seizure - Students' Rights: A nuts and bolts review of the law.
  • Disproportionate Minority Confinement and Expulsion: Race is a defining factor in the juvenile justice system. Hispanics and youth of African descent are disproportionately represented in commitments to DYS, the detention population and the number of students expelled from public schools. Strategies will be discussed on how best to address this ever increasing pattern of discrimination.
  • New Treatment Initiatives: A showcase featuring programs with the greatest promise for youth today.
  • A View from the Classroom: Who are the kids in today's classrooms and how to relate to them; what are the problems in the classroom; what resources are needed; views on special education; is there a role for an advocate in the school house?
