Is Facebook a law enforcement tool? Should students be expelled for illegally swapped music? After Virginia Tech, should schools change their policies regarding accommodation of mental health issues?

Some of the most complex and dramatic legal and social issues of our time currently confront university attorneys, higher-education administrators, outside counsel and other legal practitioners. These issues are made even more dynamic because of the interplay on campus between law, technology, medicine and psychology, and various societal pressures. From the emerging legal landscape concerning student criminal background checks, the questions of student discipline for internet use, to the recommended prevention-loss systems and protocols, this conference will bring you up to date with the latest legal analysis and policies.

While violence on campus is not a new topic, adding his own perspective to this issue is our luncheon speaker, Peter Roby, Director of the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern, speaking on how college athletics can help create a culture of violence prevention.

Current Issues in Higher Education presents cutting-edge information, law, and policy useful to all college and university constituencies.

Attend and Learn:
  • How to make decisions regarding criminal background checks of students
  • The risks and benefits of social networking sites to schools
  • The size of the downloading problem and how universities should respond
  • How to balance student mental health needs v. community needs
  • If administrators have a duty to warn
