“Wrongful Convictions: Litigating and Preventing” seeks to educate attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers, and members of the general public regarding the vulnerabilities in the criminal justice system that make the criminal conviction of wholly innocent persons possible. In two successive Thursday afternoon sessions, state and federal court judges and leading practitioners in the area, both prosecutors and defense attorneys, will explore ways of improving the criminal justice system in order to prevent the grievous injustice of wrongful convictions.
In the first week’s program, “Righting Wrongs,” trial and appellate counsel will recount their real life lessons in evaluating and litigating cases aimed at reversing wrongful convictions. Judicial commentary will provide you with an inside look at how judges deal with these momentous legal issues.
The following week’s program, “Preventing Wrongful Convictions,” will look forward and examine steps to prevent wrongful convictions in the future. Expert litigators address best practices in handling eyewitness identifications, preventing false confessions and ineffective assistance of counsel, and use of forensic evidence and confidential informants.
This in-depth program will provide you with a unique opportunity to benefit from the experience and expertise of attorneys and judges who have grappled with these vital issues. You will learn from the stimulating discussion and obtain valuable lessons for your own practice or profession.

- How the Massachusetts Erroneous Convictions Law works
