Given the choice, virtually all ailing elders would prefer to remain at home rather than enter a nursing home. To help make that choice a reality for clients, elder law attorneys must tackle the complexities of community MassHealth. This program offers an in-depth exploration of key MassHealth community-based programs and fundamental concepts that have too often stumped practitioners and defeated clients’ hopes of remaining at home.
Hear leading community MassHealth experts demystify the elements of financial eligibility. Learn why program income “limits” are rarely, if ever, absolute bars to eligibility; how to calculate the deductible and, once it is calculated, how to meet it; which programs allow additional income disregards; when asset limits apply; how the waiver programs work; and more.
The presentation and materials review benefits and services available under the different programs and include a detailed “how-to” for each, addressing what, when and where to file, and how to counsel the client and family members to maximize benefits and services following approval.
Find out the ASAP’s role in the eligibility process. Learn how a geriatric care manager can assist at various points. Most importantly, take home suggestions for making this work as an integral part of your practice.
Who Should Attend:
Elder law attorneys seeking to learn about the community-based MassHealth programs most likely to assist senior clients in postponing/avoiding nursing home admission. Attorneys whose paralegals handle MassHealth applications may wish to have these staff members attend, as well. No prior knowledge of community-based MassHealth is required. Knowledge of nursing home MassHealth may be helpful for comparison purposes, but is not required. Basic knowledge of SSI-G and Veterans Aid & Attendance is assumed as panelists will mention these programs only in passing.
