Municipal Law governs almost every aspect of life in a community. From where homes can be built, to the type of renovations a homeowner can undertake; to operating a business; to recovering for damages against a town, all are governed by municipal laws and laws related to municipalities. Understanding the intersection of state law and local bylaws and ordinances is crucial to any attorney advising a client who may be seeking relief from a local board or seeking advice about suing a municipality. Attorneys new to municipal law must be aware of the traps for the unwary replete in municipal law including short statutes of limitations, unique pre-litigation requirements and the different litigation forums.

Municipal Law 101 provides the practitioner new to municipal law with the fundamental background in the major issues likely to be encountered in municipal law, including the administrative, quasi-judicial, and litigation processes. You will also learn about the recent changes to the Open Meeting Law and the Public Records Law and how those changes may affect the discovery and litigation process. Practitioners will learn from current town counsel and city solicitors with decades of experience representing municipalities and in all areas of municipal law.

Attend and Learn:
  • How to identify basics of municipal law practice issues in zoning, licensing and municipal liability
  • How to recognize and evaluate whether to take on a municipal law case
  • How to avoid potential pitfalls
  • What initial steps to take before initiating a municipal law claim
