JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER : POLICY INITIATIVES
The Juvenile Justice Center is involved in various policy initiatives aimed at ensuring that the juvenile justice system serves the youth in it well. Additionally, the JJC focuses on how youth get into the system and what opportunities for success they may count on when they get out.

| Pursuant to the 2002 Supreme Judicial Court ruling in Comm. v. Gavin G., 437 Mass. 470, holding that Massachusetts state law does not permit the expungement of juveniles' records. The JJC has again supported legislation to permit the purging of juveniles' records. |

| The JJC actively monitors police/youth interactions to ensure youths' civil rights are protected. The JJC has embarked on a training initiative with the MBTA Transit Police, which focuses on adolescent development issues and effective approaches for policing youth. |

| Survey of Immigrant Youth Reveals Views of Police & Juvenile Justice System, January 2004 |
|
| The Juvenile Justice Center conducted a survey of 400 immigrant youth in the Boston area about a range of topics including their interactions with police and the juvenile justice system. The survey results were published at the New Young Americans Conference; Charting a Course for Immigrant Youth in a Changing Commonwealth, held January 8 and 9, 2004. The survey is available below, as are conference program notes. |

| NLG National Immigration Law Project |

One of the topics of the conference was the impact of involvement of juvenile justice on immigrant youth with tenuous immigrant status and strategies defenders can employ to best protect these youth. |
Dan Kesselbrenner, Director of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) National Immigration Law Project, prepared a guide to immigration law for juvenile defenders. The powerpoint link below offers defenders a primer on the impacts of juvenile adjudications, as well as youthful offender adjudications, on children's immigration status. Massachusetts has failed to address the overrepresentation of youth of color in its juvenile justice system as required by federal law, according to a report released by the American Civil Liberties Union at a news conference with juvenile justice advocates. |
