HEALTH AND BIOMEDICAL LAW CONCENTRATION:

NEWS & EVENTS

 

  • The Center for Advanced Legal Studies and the Journal of Health and Biomedical Law will be presenting a program entitled Applying Assisted Reproductive Technology to Practice over two Thursdays - November 3 and November 17 - from 4:30 - 7:30 on each day
     
    • Faculty include Professor Charles Kindregen and Professor Barry Brown, together with members of the judiciary from the Probate and Family Court and practicing members of the bar. 
  •  
    • Topics covered will include: Understanding Assisted Reproductive Technology, Genetic Materials and the Children of ART, Surrogate Parenting, and Same-Sex Couples and ART.

    • Students may attend this program free of charge and may purchase program written materials for a reduced fee.  If you are interested in attending, please follow the registration procedures outlined in the attached link above or stop by the ALS office on the first floor, next to the security booth. 

 

  • The American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) is sponsoring its 2006 Student Writing Competition in Legal Medicine
    • The Letourneau Award of $1000 will be given to a law student who submits the winning paper dealing with any aspect of legal medicine, including: 
    • Medical licensure and regulation of the profession; business aspects of medical practice; liability of physicians, hospitals, managed care organizations and pharmaceutical manufacturers; public health law; the physician-patient relationship; care of special patients; food and drug law; medical research; forensic science; and the history of legal medicine.
    • Submissions must be no less than 3000 words and no more than 5000 words, excluding citations, and presented in essay form.
     
    • No previously published paper will be considered, however, students may submit unpublished papers which have been written for scholarly classes.

    All submissions will be considered for publication in the Journal of Legal Medicine or other medical legal publication.

    • All papers must be submitted by January 10, 2006.

PLEASE NOTE:  AUTHORS MAY ONLY SUBMIT A PAPER TO ONLY ONE ACLM WRITING COMPETITION - LEGAL MEDICINE OR BIOETHICS

       

  • The American College of Legal Medicine is also sponsoring its 2006 Student Writing Competition in Bioethics
    • This competition is open to law or health professions students.  Three awards, for $1000, $500 and $250, will be presented to the respective first, second and third place winners for original papers written by on topics in bioethics, including: 
      • Ethical implications of death and dying; reproductive rights; bioterrorism; the patient-physician relationship ; patient safety; public health; biological sciences; organ donation and allocation; biomedical and behavioral research; and medical genetics.
       
    • Submissions must be no less than 3000 words and no more than 5000 words, excluding citations, and presented in essay form.
     
    • No paper which has been published previously in any form will be considered.  All submissions must be the exclusive, original work of only one author.  All submissions will be considered for publication in the Journal of Legal Medicine or other medical legal publication.
     
    • All papers must be submitted by January 10, 2006.
