Fall 2008 Intellectual Property Law Concentration Courses

Spring 2009 Intellectual Property Law Concentration Courses

 

A. Required Courses

 1. Introductory Sequence

All students are required to take the following entry level course.  It is strongly recommended that students take this course before taking any other Intellectual Property Concentration courses:
 
Intellectual Property 2 credits
   
All students must also take two (2) of the following four (4) courses by the time of graduation.
 
Copyright Law 3 credits
Patent Law 3 credits
Trade Secrets Protection and Exploitation 2 credits
Trademark Law* 2 credits

 

* Please note that Trademark Law will only be offered during the Fall 2008 semester during the 2008-2009 school year.


 2. Skills Courses

In addition to the Introductory Sequence, students must take at least one (1) skills course chosen from the following approved list:

Advanced Technology Seminar: Legal Issues, Research
and Practice in Cyberspace
2 credits
Counseling Technology Leading Emerging Enterprises 2 credits
Drafting Patent Claims 2 credits
European Union 3 credits
Independent Study in Intellectual Property 2 credits
Internship in an Intellectual Property Field* 2/3 credits
*Please Note: This course is graded on a pass/fail basis and student
participation, and is subject to prior approval by one of the Concentration
Faculty Directors.
International Business Transactions 3 credits
Law Practice Management I: Planning for Law as a Career and an Enterprise Seminar 3 credits
* Please Note: Law Practice Management I will be removed from the IP Concentration's Skills list beginning in the spring of 2009. Only students who have completed the course prior to the spring of 2009 may count it toward the IP Concentration's Skills requirement.  
Licensure of Intellectual Property Rights 2 credits
*Please Note: This course is graded on a pass/fail basis
Journal of High Technology Law* 2 credits
* Please Note: This is course is graded on a pass/fail basis and is subject
to the student being selected as a journal staff member. Once on
the journal, staff members must complete required work and have it
certified by the journal's advisors, Professors Rustad and Beckerman-Rodau.
Staff members may only count two (2) credits of journal work toward completion
of the IP Law Concentration, even though they may receive additional credits
for completion of the J.D. degree.
Participation in The Giles Rich Moot Court Competition or The Saul Lefkowitz Trademark Competition* 2 credits
* Please Note: This course is graded on a pass/fail basis and is
subject to the student being selected as a team member.
Patent Litigation Seminar 2 credits
Practice Before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office 2 credits
Research Assistant 2 credits
* Please Note: This course is graded on a pass/fail basis and is subject
to the student being selected as a research assistant for a full-time faculty member
conducting research in an intellectual property law field.

Completion of a Thesis on an intellectual property law related topic

2 credits

* Please Note:  The Thesis may be graded on either a pass/fail or letter grade basis, at the discretion of the faculty member serving as the Thesis advisor.   
 
Transactional Law and Practice 2 credits
 


 B. Advanced IP Electives Menu

Students must take additional Intellectual Property courses, including at least one course from the following list, in compiling their eighteen (18) credits for the IP Law Concentration.

Advanced Copyrights 2 credits
Antitrust 3 credits
Biomedical Law and Public Policy 2 credits
Biotech Patent Law 2 credits
Directed Study Project 2 credits
* Please Note: This course requires prior approval by one of the Concentration Faculty Directors.
e-Commerce and the Law 2 credits
e-Healthcare Privacy and Technology 2 credits
Entertainment Law 2 credits
Global Issues of Law, Policy and Ethics in the New Technologies 2 credits
Global Science and Technology Management 2 credits
International Intellectual Property 2 credits
International Intellectual Property Licensing 2 credits
International Trade Law 3 credits
Internet Law 2 credits
Mass Communications Law 3 credits
Scientific Evidence 3 credits
Software Law 2 credits
Sports Law 2 credits
