ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY CONCENTRATION:
PATENT LAW SPECIALIZATION

Beginning in the 2008 - 2009 academic year, students in the Intellectual Property Concentration may opt to specialize further in Patent Law. The additional requirements for the Patent Law Specialization are noted below.

To qualify for the Patent Law Specialization a student must:

A. Meet all of the course, credit, writing and GPA requirements for completion of the Intellectual Property Concentration, as set forth at www.law.suffolk.edu/academic/ip/courses.cfm and www.law.suffolk.edu/academic/ip/complete.cfm;

B. Have taken the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office Registration Exam (the "Patent Bar") or demonstrate that she or he has the appropriate science background to qualify to take the Patent Bar. (The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office established the requiremnts for eligibility to take the Patent Bar. For more information on the Patent Bar, go to www.lawprofessor.org/patentbar/examrequirements.html);

Interested students may show proof of Patent Bar eligibility by providing:

1) Evidence that the student has passed the patent bar exam; or

2) Evidence provided by the student that he/she has a degree that clearly makes him/her eligible to take the patent bar exam (i.e. engineering degree from accredited program; PhD in Biology or Chemistry); or

3) Evidence provided by the student that he/she has applied to take the patent bar exam and been deemed eligible to take the exam by the PTO.

C. Complete the three credit Patent Law course; and

D. Take two (2) courses from the following list as Intellectual Property Concentration electives:

Biotech Patent Law 2 credits
Drafting Patent Claims 2 credits
Patent Litigation Seminar 2 credits
Pratice Before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office 2 credits
Concentration Thesis on a patent law-related topic 2 credits
   
   
Courses taken pursuant to sections C and D above will count simultaneously toward the requirements for both the Intellectual Property Concentration and the Patent Law Specialization.
