COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


International Human Rights: Law, Film and Social Media
Ms. Alicia Foley Winn
2 credits day; 2 credits evening.

This course will examine international human rights through law, film, and social media. Students will view various documentaries during class meetings and will discuss the link between these films and assigned international case law and legal instruments. Students will also be asked to examine the role of Internet-based campaigns, PSAs, and social media in exposing world-wide human rights violations. This class emphasizes gender-based human rights violations such as female genital cutting (FGC); sex trafficking; forced marriage; bride price and dowry; and gender selective abortion and infanticide. Students will be graded on the basis of a final research project or paper which may be completed independently or collaboratively (subject to instructor’s approval). Students are expected to participate throughout the semester and to present their work to the class at the end of the semester.
