Juvenile Law and the Rights of Adolescents

The representation of adolescents in various legal proceedings presents many challenges. Adolescents are routinely involved in litigation in many different areas of law. This course will examine the representation of adolescents in family law, care and protection matters, education, children in need of supervision (CHINS) matters, immigration, juvenile delinquency, criminal law, and privacy issues including medical care and abortion. Students taking this course will learn and discuss the unique ethical issues that commonly arise in representing adolescents. Students will also learn about adolescent development and its impact upon the attorney-client relationship.
