COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Consumer Credit Survey
Prof. Kathleen C. Engel
3 credits day; 3 credits evening.

This course covers laws governing consumer credit, including anti-discrimination laws, the Truth-in-Lending Act, the Home Ownership and Equity Protection Act, the Federal Trade Commission Act, unfair and deceptive acts and practices laws, and anti-predatory lending laws. We will also look at common law claims of fraud and improvident contracts as well as contract claims like unconscionability. We will examine an array of credit products, such as payday loans, auto title loans, refund anticipation loans, home loans, student loans, and credit cards. Given the current issues that have arisen with foreclosure practices, we will also spend time on foreclosure. Lastly, we will analyze the brand new Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that the Act created.
