and remedies for the victims.
In the late 1990s, international human
rights activists began to draw attention to
the worldwide plague of human trafficking. As
a subset of human trafficking, the sex trade,
targeting tens of thousands of women and
children, routinely involves the most brutal
kinds of exploitation. The second day of this
conference, “Hidden Epidemic: Child Sex
Trafficking,” brings together experts in this
field to focus on child sex trafficking
consider the scope of the problem as well as
various strategies to respond to it. A
striking feature of this problem is that,
while child sex trafficking is a heinous
violation of the rights of the most
vulnerable, it is often overlooked in
mainstream human rights discourse, and
unknown to the general public. Leading
academic experts will present the legal
framework and root causes of the problem, and
activists will share their perspective from
the trenches and suggest possible strategies
for opposing trafficking and remedies for the
victims. Child welfare and human rights
specialists, international lawyers and
prosecutors will benefit from attending.
Tuition is $99.00, $69.00 for non-profits
and government employees, Suffolk &
Northeastern students may attend free of
charge, all other students, the fee would be
$25.00 (includes book).
