Jane E. Kirtley

 S H O R T   B I O G R A P H Y

Distinguished Visiting Professor Jane Kirtley taught Information Privacy Law and Mass Communication Law during the Spring 2004 semester. She is the Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law at the University of Minnesota's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She also serves as the Director of the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law and is an affiliated faculty member at the University of Minnesota Law School. Prof. Kirtley, prior to accepting her present position at Minnesota, served as the Executive Director of The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press in Washington, D.C. In this position, Prof. Kirtley administered and supervised all legal defense and research activities offered by the Reporters Committee to journalists. She has also served as an adjunct faculty member at American University and the University of Maryland.

Professor Kirtley received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northwestern University. She is also a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law where she served as Executive Articles Editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law. Prof. Kirtley, following law school graduation, practiced with the Washington, D.C. law firm of Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle.

Professor Kirtley is a prolific author, as well as a noted commentator and speaker. She has authored articles published in law reviews and media publications, and has appeared before more than 500 groups including the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and the Federal Communications Bar Association. Professor Kirtley's media appearances include "The New Hour with Jim Lehrer," "Nightline," "The Today Show," "Crossfire" and "Morning Edition."
