HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNET RESOURCES

The following are Web sites that provide information about human rights, including reports, documents, judicial decisions, and links to related Web sites.

NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (NGO'S)

This worldwide organization works to promote the observance of human rights as embodied in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. This site includes current information on human rights, reports on Amnesty's activities and campaigns, country reports and links to other human rights sites.

This site is maintained by Human Rights Watch, a coalition of independent human rights groups. The site includes reports on campaigns to remedy human rights abuses, Human Rights Watch publications, its World Report, country reports and links to other human rights organizations.

This site has ICRC reports and articles as well as links to primary source documents on international humanitarian law and human rights.

 

ADVOCACY GROUPS

The Lawyers Committee is a group of attorneys working to promote the development of legal institutions to support human rights and the enforcement of human rights laws. The site includes reports on the Committee's campaigns and programs, a lawyer-to-lawyer network, information about the Committee's publications and feature articles on current issues.

This advocacy group includes health professionals and scientists working to investigate and prevent human rights violations. This site provides access to publications and reports on specific projects, educational/training materials and a bibliography of human rights resources.

"The Human Rights Center (HRC) protects and promotes human rights worldwide by investigating and documenting human rights abuses and training the next generation of human rights researchers, policymakers, and advocates."

This group works "for the respect and promotion of human rights throughout the world."

"HRI is dedicated to the empowerment of human rights activists and organizations, and to the education of governmental and intergovernmental agencies and officials and other actors in the public and private sphere, on human rights issues and the role of civil society."

 

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

The UNHCFHR monitors and investigates human rights violations in all parts of the world. The site provides a chronology of news events, the full-text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, official documents, treaties, publications, descriptions of programs and activities and related links,

The mission of the UNHCFR is to protect refugees and resolve problems of refugees. The site provides news and timely information about refugee situations throughout the world, country specific reports, official UN documents, documentaries, and full-text of The State of the World's Refugees: A Humanitarian Agenda.

 

INTERNATIONAL COURTS AND TRIBUNALS

The following sites provide general information about the court/tribunal, pending cases, judgments and other court documents, rules of procedure and press releases:

This Web site includes background information on the history of human rights, links to legal and political documents, international human rights organizations, resources and listings of newsgroups and discussion groups.

This site includes Breaking News, an Activist Center and reports on Slavery Today.

This site includes full-text databases with current and comprehensive information about refugees throughout the world, with links to U.N. official documents, country reports, international instruments and refugee case law.

This site includes documents related to the reproductive and sexual rights of women, annotated links to research material, governmental and non-governmental documents, and a bibliography of women's international human rights sources.

  • PROJECT DIANA

This is an international archive of human rights documents at Yale Law School. The archive includes online litigation documents which may be downloaded. Another DIANA site is located at the University of Minnesota Human Rights Library at http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts.

This site includes general information about the United Nations and human rights, U.N. briefing papers on human rights, news reports, access to treaties and other documents. Additional access to United Nations materials may be found at the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center at http://www1.umn.edu/humanrts/un-orgs.htm.

This site offers a broad range of human rights material, including a searchable database of human rights documents, treaties and other instruments, U.N. documents, U.S. human rights documents, bibliographies and links to regional materials.

  • U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE COUNTRY REPORTS ON HUMAN RIGHTS

This site provides a link to Country Reports on Human Rights Practices released by the U.S. Department of State from 1993 to the present.

A project of the Fletcher School at Tufts University, this site provides links to the full text of multilateral treaties relating to human rights.

This site is most helpful for its links to hundreds of primary source documents (mainly treaties) related to human rights.

 

RESEARCH GUIDES

This comprehensive guide offers information about research methodology, primary and secondary sources.

A guide to finding United Nations documents (e.g., summary records of meetings, sessional reports, and working documents) related to human rights.

This guide includes bibliographies, directories, research guides, human rights instruments, as well as sources of case law, country reports, and online resources.

  • WAR CRIMES RESEARCH GUIDE

New England School of Law Library

This guide includes information on resources for war crimes and human rights research.

 

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL LAW

The official Web site of the International Criminal Court.

This Web site has primary source material about the ICC and also helpful guides and factsheets, like its Rome Statute Simplified.

This guide to information on the International Criminal Court was compiled by the University of Chicago Law School Library.

This guide is compiled and maintained by the American Society of International Law.

The portal has links to sites related to human rights law, "research memoranda" on issues before international courts and tribunals, a research guide, and "instant analysis" articles "on the hottest topics in international criminal law."

The Web site of the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development.

"This site is intended both as a journal that reports on developments related to the laws of war, and as a resource for those seeking further information on the subject."

The IHL Research Initiative acts as a clearinghouse for materials on international humanitarian law, including news, analysis, and judicial decisions. Registration is required (and free).

This site has numerous links arranged by topic (e.g., child soldiers, forensic science and atrocity crimes, and native peoples) and by nation, region, or case.
