NOTEBOOK COMPUTING

Sargent Hall has over 3000 data ports located in all classrooms, the library and the cafeteria for Internet and Email access.  Wireless access is also available in our common spaces.

Whether you own a notebook or intend to purchase a new machine, we recommend the following specifications:

Intel Processor, 2 GB RAM, 80G hard drive, CD-ROM/DVD, 3 year on site
warranty, Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista operating system

All laptops must be scanned for viruses and obtain a certification sticker from Computer Services before connecting to the Sargent Hall Network ports.  The Symantec Antivirus program is available free of charge to all registered students and will be provided to you during the certification process.  You must keep your systems up-to-date with the latest security updates and current virus definitions from Symantec or your antivirus program.

   * If your laptop causes suspicious traffic over the network, it will be suspended from the network.

In addition to the corporate edition of Symantec antivirus, we also provide the Microsoft Office Professional suite (including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and OneNote) without charge.  The software bundle will be available on CD to the entering class when you get your laptop certified.  This is available to Suffolk Law students only and is a savings of more than $150 off the best academic discount price.

Call Computer Services at 617 573-8352 to schedule your laptop scan.  During June & July, scanning is available M – F between 8:30 – 5:00.
Evening and Saturday scanning hours begin August 4th

This year we are offering special pricing through three different vendors: Dell and Lenovo if you want to purchase a PC/laptop and Apple if you would prefer a MacBook.

If you purchase a new laptop, whether one we recommend or your own choice, it is best and quickest if you bring the laptop in to be certified before connecting it to any network or installing any programs (essentially in the box).

The models recommended are available at:

DELL:  http://www.dell.com/suffolklaw

LENOVO: http://www.cdwg.com/SuffolkStudents

APPLE: http://www.apple.com/edu/suffolk
If you intend to use a MAC for typing exams, please be advised of the following requirements:
MacBook or MacBook Pro with the Intel Chip
            Apple’s Boot Camp software installed
Purchase and install the Windows XP OS

If you are purchasing a system from Dell, CDW-G or Apple or using the software bundle, the Law School is not responsible for care or warranty of this system.

Students may request additional loans to cover these costs by providing the Suffolk Law Financial Aid office with a receipt documenting the purchase.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss configuration and purchase of a notebook computer, please feel free to call Computer Services at 617 573-8352, or email computinglaw@suffolk.edu.
