SYMANTIC ANTIVIRUS - INSTALLATION

Viruses, worms, virus hoaxes and other “malware” have become commonplace on the internet. They arrive as attachments in e-mail, on disks from friends, on your keychain drive which you plugged into a desktop computer at work. Installing Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus1 software and keeping the virus definition files updates is your first and best defense against this onslaught. The Law School requires that you install the Symantec AntiVirus product on any computer which plugs into our network (your notebook computer) or exchanges e-mail or files with our network (your desktop pc at home). It is very important that you install the AntiVirus product correctly.

Installing Symantec AntiVirus

Place the Symantec AntiVirus CD in the CD drive. XP Professional will bring up the first installation menu. Choose Install Symantec AntiVirus. (Figure 1) and then click on Install AntiVirus Client (Figure 2).

The next several choices are related to configuring the type of installation you want on your computer. Click the box Microsoft Exchange/Outlook (Figure 3) and then next. Click on the Unmanaged radio button (Figure 4) and then Next. As Figure 5 indicates, choose Filesystem Realtime Protection and then click Next. And Run Live Update after installation (Figure 6). Symantec AntiVirus will now install. Once it has completed its installation, you will be connected to the LiveUpdate screen (Figure 7).

Configuring Symantec AntiVirus

If you have successfully installed Symantec AntiVirus you should see the yellow mouse icon in the system tray (on the bottom right of the screen in Figure 8. The next steps will take you through the steps to configure the AntiVirus product to schedule LiveUpdate to run automatically every day before we do this; however, we need you to look at the LiveUpdate screen carefully. If you have installed Symantec successfully, you will see the yellow mouse icon in the system tray. Click on this icon and look at the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition screen (Figure 8). In the middle of this screen you will see the installed versions for both the Program (the Symantec software) and the Virus Definition File (the virus definitions which Symantec is using to look for viruses on your computer). As new viruses are created, Symantec updates the virus definition files, and sometimes the Symantec software, to protect you. You may be told that if you are not running a certain version of the software and the virus definition files, you need to run LiveUpdate. The way to check what versions you are running is by looking at the screen in Figure 8.

To schedule LiveUpdate to run automatically every day, click on the yellow mouse icon as indicated in Figure 8. Then, click on run in Express Mode and Run LiveUpdate automatically (Figure 11). Then click on the File menu and Schedule LiveUpdate as indicated in Figure 12 through Figure 15. Symantec updates the virus definition files on Wednesday evenings every week and more often when necessary. It is better to run LiveUpdate and get the message that your software is updated then to discover you have a virus. You will want to be sure LiveUpdate runs every day so your machine will receive these updates as soon as they are created.
