CURRENT NOTEBOOK SPECIFICATIONS
In conjunction with your legal studies, we strongly recommended
that you use a personal computer. Using a notebook computer during
your law school career can be invaluable; in Sargent Hall students
have the ability to connect a notebook computer to Ethernet data
ports located in all classrooms, the library and the cafeteria.
The 3000+ data ports throughout the building allow ubiquitous access
to e-mail and the WWW/Internet. |
Whether you own a notebook or intend to purchase a new machine,
your computer must have the following
specifications for compatibility with our systems:
-
Intel Pentium Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80G hard drive, Intel , CD-ROM, 3 year on site
warranty, Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system
You may wish to augment these specifications with some of the following:- A personal printer such as the Dell P1500, HP 1012
or an inkjet printer
- A wireless (802.11b or 802.11g) network adapter
if you are planning on installing a wireless network in your
home or apartment (the Law School has wireless capability in
the common areas of the fourth floor)
- A DVD/CD-RW - which will allow you to play multimedia
files and backup files for archiving from your hard disk or
- CompleteCare (if you are purchasing a new system
from Dell) - which protects you in case the unit is accidentally
damaged.
Three important notes:
- First - the Law School requires that
you run the Norton antivirus software configured to auto-update,
on any computer connected to the University network. This includes
notebook machines or off-site desktop machines used to send e-mail
to faculty or students. To achieve this goal, we make it possible
for you to purchase the Norton antivirus software and the Microsoft
Office Professional suite (including Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint
and Access) at the Suffolk Law Bookstore. The software bundle
including both the antivirus and Microsoft software is available
for $49.95. This is available to Suffolk Law students only and
is a savings of more than $130 off the best academic discount
price. When you arrive on campus you will need to present a copy
of your student id or acceptance letter in order to purchase
the software license at the Law School Bookstore. If this antivirus
software is not already installed on your computer, we require that
you purchase and install it.
- Second - Computer Services will provide support
for laptop systems with the XP Professional operating system
and we require that you install all
critical and security related operating system updates and patches.
We do not provide support for Macintosh systems or earlier versions
of the PC operating system including Windows 95, 98, ME, or XP
Home Edition. Computer Services can not provide an operating
system upgrade so it is very important that you purchase a machine
with XP Professional or upgrade your existing system to either
Windows 2000 Professional or XP Professional. Wireless access
in the Law School is available only for systems running the XP
Professional operating system.
Dell has made it possible for students in the Law School to purchase
a notebook computer at a reduced price and we strongly encourage
you to take advantage of this purchase plan. We recommend several
Dell models which include a network cable, a wireless network card,
a three-year, on-site warranty and CompleteCare. To configure,
price and purchase a laptop from Dell, please access the following
Website: Dell
Computer. You may also call Dell at 800.695.8133. If you call,
please make sure you identify yourself as a student at Suffolk
University Law School.
If you are purchasing a system from Dell or using the software
bundle, the Law School is not responsible for care or warranty
of this system.
Students may request additional loans to cover these costs by
providing the Suffolk Law Financial Aid office with a receipt documenting
the purchase. |
